Garcia is very proud of her 5 year old son, Aaron. This little boy remarks on how beautiful his mother is. He hugs her when she is sad and kisses her when she lifts him. His hug to anyone is more a neck nestles than a proper embrace. But how else could a kid with no hands embrace his mother??
Aaron has no limbs. All tests during Garcia’s pregnancy showed a normal fetal development. Trouble struck when Garcia went into an early labor at 34 weeks. Only the later tests revealed about the abnormality to the doctors. Aaron was born a week later. Infected to juvenile jaundice, he weighed 4.13 pounds. All of Garcia’s dreams shattered when she held her son for a quick moment before the doctors rushed him to the intensive care. Devastated at the first look, all her hopes that everything would be normal evaporated. Garcia built her strength to accept her son as he was. He was her son, a part of her and they way he looks did not bother her.
Just like any other baby, Aaron too flipped over at 3 months, at 6 months he could spin a toy with his left foot and at 9 months he covered himself with the roll of the Christmas present cover pulling it with his mouth. He was put into a motorized wheelchair that was controlled by head movements at 18 months. Finally at the age of 2 years, Aaron started putting together words to frame sentences. Aaron now eats his food from his plate using his mouth. He flips and twists his body on the living room floor to the beats of his favorite song, ‘Sexy Black’ by Justin Timberlake. He rolls into the bedroom to play video games, operating the controller with his little foot. Aaron does not have the stumps to support the prostheses suggested by doctors. He will need help throughout.
Garcia is now working hard day and night to arrange $3000. She needs this money to buy a very special Christmas gift for her son this year. This gift is a special computer for Aaron. This computer will have a special mouse that will be controlled by Aaron with a reflective sticker attached to his forehead. This device can help physically challenged Aaron to read and write, for he is mentally very stable. His physical disability is not a hindrance when he has this special computer. He can be a part of the normal world, except for his ways of locomotion are different. Garcia now leads a perfectly normal life with Aaron as she has gotten to accept him the way he is.
Sacramento’s Book of Dreams has come forward to help Garcia with her quest for money by conducting online and offline donation programs. To help the little boy you can make an online donation by visiting the Sac Bee daily website.
